Do you love to read? Can you remember the first book that made you fall in love with reading? While I can't remember the first book that turned me into an avid reader, I do remember the person responsible. My mother loves to read and we would have family reading time at night before bed. My mom never had to pester me to read, I always was a willing reader. I am proud to say I have passed my passion for reading onto my own darling daughters. My eight year old is a fantastic reader and I am 110% positive that is why she is such an excellent student.
And even though I can't remember the first book I read, I do remember the ones that left a lifelong impression. The Anne of Green Gables series, anything Nancy Drew, Daddy Longlegs, Little Women, The Secret Garden, and Pride & Prejudice are among my favorites.
Sadly, many children do not have access to books. First Book is a nonprofit organization that provides access to books for children in need. BlogHer and BookRenter have teamed up to donate books via First Book. From May 3-28, they will donate one book for every comment that they receive on this post. All you have to do is comment on the book(s) that made a difference in your life. Easy Peasy right? Another easy way to help is by blogging about this campaign. Birthday Wishes Do Come True

All the hard work that went into my surprise party was enough to make a girl swoon. As if that wasn't enough, my darling family & friends gifted me with some of my favorite things.
It's enough to make a girl delirious with happiness!

From my sister-in-law Kelly & brother-in-law Craig, I got this cute Elle top from Kohl's. I also got a Starbucks' gift card......yum!

My sister Leslie and brother-in-law Clint got me this WoodWick key lime coconut candle. The wick makes a crackling sound, like a real fire. The scent is beachy and amazing. They also got me the cutest meditating frog figurine for my desk at work.

The Andrades-Steve, Vicki, Kelsi, & Tisha-got me these earrings with my initials. I love them. (The earrings & the Andrades!)

Bethany, Zac and baby Finn gave me this super cute Paperchase striped lunch tote and cloth bound Jane Eyre (which was on my birthday wish list!). Plus, I got to drool all over baby Finn which was a present all in itself. Oh how I love him and his fluffy cheeks!

Tessa and Emile got me a Customizable Starbucks mug that came with a paint pen. All the guests signed it, then I baked it in the oven to seal in the paint pen. It is really great to read my birthday wishes while sipping on my coffee. They also got me L'Occitane Verbena shower gel which has the most wonderful fresh smell. Tessa also bought me my new favorite bath product, Honey Please bath fizzer by One Bath & Body. I could not find a picture of it, but are sold at Target. I loved the smell & how it softened my skin so much that I went to Target on lunch to buy myself another one.

Scarlett & Ray got me a Sierra Wind candle by Circle E. I love love love Circle E candles. These candles really do their job by filling the room with it's wonderful scent. Scarlett also treated me to my new 'do and pedicure.
Audra & Josh got my wonderful, beautiful, delicious cake which I will have to post a picture of.
And Audra treated me to Mexican for lunch on my girl's day.
My parents and grandparents gave me money which I used to do a little online shopping. I bought another cloth bound book for my collection, Great Expectations.

Being a total beauty product junkie, I couldn't help but use that money to buy me some goodness from the fairest beauty store of them all....

I got everything this 29ish girl could want for her birthday
Maybe turning 29ish isn't so bad after all.

I am still holding out for this wish list item. Hey, I still have 1 week left until the big day!

What a wonderful weekend! On Saturday morning, my friends Audra & Scarlett picked me up for a pre birthday girl's day. First on the agenda, PEDICURES!! And boy did my feet need it. I got them painted the most awesome coral red color

Next we headed to a local Mexican restaurant where I gorged on some yummy fajitas.

We still had some time to kill before our hair appointments so we stopped at TCBY and ate some yummy frozen yogurt. Then I got my hair cut & highlighted, so pretty! After all that, it was time to head home for a nap.

And I never expected what happened next! As we turned the corner to my driveway, my husband & brother-in-law (surrounded by friends and family) were holding a big sign. Do you know what that sign said??!!! Well "Happy Birthday Amy" of course. A surprise party! A wonderful, terrific, fantastic, totally unexpected surprise party. Needless to say I was overwhelmed. My sweet husband, along with my wonderful friends and family, really put together the nicest party. For starters the food: fried fish, fried shrimp, coleslaw, baked beans and deviled eggs. And a yummy cake that read "Oh No, Amy's the Big 30". It was modeled after this napkin.

All the decorations were bright & pretty!

I loved all the decorations; they sure did add some happiness to turning 30. And the strawberry margaritas helped too.
As if the party wasn't enough, I got some wonderful presents too. Come back tomorrow to see the loot I got!

This week Jocelyn's elementary school is celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday by participating in Read Across America. Each day had a different theme, today being Hat Day in honor of the cat in the hat. Let me brag on my little miss smarty pants for a minute. I could not be more proud of Jocelyn and her achievements. She makes straight A's, reads on a 5th grade level (she is in 2nd grade) and we just got a permission form for her to be tested for PACE. Oh Jocelyn, the places you will go!

29ish (a math lesson)

I don't like math. it was never my strongest subject. See what you can make out of
these equations

2 weeks + me - my 20s = 30
14 days + me - my 20s = 30
336 hours + me - my 20s = 30

Seems no matter how I solve it, I keep coming up with the wrong answer.

If I was a math wizard, the equation would work out more like this.
2 weeks + me - my 20s = 29ish

There problem solved.

Now for a little history lesson. On this day 30 years ago (or 29ish years ago)

Another special event,21 years ago on March 4, 1989, my sister in law Ashley was born. My 21st birthday seems like an eternity ago to me.

My funny little girls are demanding. Plain and simple. They want what they want when they want it and it can be infuriating. They say Momma 25 times in 2 minutes if I don't yield to their wants right away. I get exhausted, stressed, bent out of shape, exasperated. Sometimes I make them wait just to try to teach them a little patience. I read this. Got a lump in my throat. Burning tears in my eyes. An ache in my chest. I immediately wanted to leave work, pick them up from school, and spend the rest of the day cuddling in the bed with my persistent naggers. I think I am the one that needs to learn about patience. Next time I am feeling Momma overload, I'll take a step back, a deep breath, and try to remember what it was like to be little. Because they will not be little forever. And one day it won't be the nagging that I remember just the wonderful feeling of being needed.

What a fantastic weekend!

Friday evening my movie buddy Audra and I went to see Valentine's Day.
A perfect, carefree chick flick.
Saturday my hubby and I went shopping with some friends of ours. And I got these sunglasses as an early birthday present. Ralph Lauren aviator glasses..LOVE!

We also went to Old Navy where I got 2 pair of jeans ($19 each!) and 3 shirts that were on clearance (score!) Then we ate Stix. I had some delish spring rolls and Pad Thai. For dessert we stopped at Marble Slab for a yummy ice cream cone. Sweet Cream is my favorite flavor at Marble Slab. I was definitely fat and happy after all that food!

On Sunday I cooked a big lunch for my preggo sister in law Kelly, who was being admitted on Sunday night for an induction. All my in laws came to eat. I made Jessica Simpson's Chicken and Dumplings. (Don't laugh! It is super easy and always a big hit with the family). I also made my famous baked macaroni and cheese, English peas, and Kelly's favorite rolls. Our friends Ray and Scarlett joined us as well. Ray had given Scarlett Ree Drummond's cookbook for Valentine's so she made some yummy treats and brought them to us.

Scarlett made the Best Sheet Cake Ever and it was perfect.

She also made Bacon-Wrapped Jalapeno Thingies which were just plain delicious and don't you love the name!

Ray and Scarlett were kind enough to give us their old entertainment center which is a vast improvement to the one we had. Scott also bought me a bookcase for the living room which Ray helped put together (truth be told Ray did most of the assembling. Need someone to plan defensive plays, Scott's your man. Need a handyman, better call someone else. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses) Anyhow, the bookcase looks fantastic.

And I will count Monday as the weekend because I took the day off of work to wait on the arrival of this beautiful girl

Don't those cheeks look good enough to eat! I can tell you first hand they were sweet and yummy because I tasted those cheeks plenty. Mwah!

So sweet!

Being an Auntie is the next best thing to being a mommy. I am blessed with 5 beautiful nieces and 1 handsome nephew. I love them all dearly. Life is good!

Saturday we celebrated Jocelyn's upcoming 8th birthday. We had a Hannah Montana pj party complete with pizza, cupcakes, and a slumber party. They all had a blast and I did too. On Friday it snowed here on the Gulf Coast! The girls were so excited! They wanted to build Frosty, but there wasn't enough snow. We played for about 15 minutes before the excitement wore off. The snow didn't last long but I know they will remember it for a long time to come.

Some of the titles available include Pride and Prejudice, Madame Bovary, Great Expectations, Wuthering Heights, Emma, Sense and Sensibility, The Picture of Dorian Gray. some titles are only available in the UK but I hope they cross the pond soon. I just had to add these to my amazon wish list . After all, my birthday is coming up.

It has been a while since I have posted on my much neglected blog. And I am back to share a new addiction with you. Are you ready for it? I have 3 words for you.

Jalapeno Popper Dip

It is pure delicious. Very addicting. I made it for a baby shower this past Saturday. I have made it twice more since then. So easy. So fast. So delish! I want to keep all of it for myself! You can't have mine but you can make your own.

(2) 8 oz cream cheese (softened)

4 oz can of mild green chilies (drained)

2 oz of diced jalapenos (drained)

1 cup of shredded of Parmesan cheese

1/2 cup of panko bread crumbs

Preheat oven to 350

In a medium size bowl combine cream cheese, chilies, jalapenos and mix until smooth.

Spread mixture into glass pie dish.

Combine Parmesan cheese and bread crumbs then sprinkle on top.

Bake at 350 until bubbly and brown (about 30 mins)

I have served this awesome dip with Tostitos and Fritos. Other suggestions I have heard include Ritz crackers and french bread. Or you could just eat it with a spoon!

Weekend Recap

It was a busy weekend with my funny little girls. Friday night we ate pizza while watching Monsters vs Aliens. Then on Saturday, Jocie & I woke up super early to participate in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. We walked 5 miles and Jocie was a superstar walker, she barely complained at all during the 2 hours it took for us to complete the walk. Jocie had to work on a school project which consisted of decorating a pumpkin to resemble a character out of a book. The book she choose was Junie B Jones, Toothless Wonder. We had such fun turning her little pumpkin into Junie B. I got Mallie a pumpkin to decorate to so she would not feel left out. The girls then went to spend the night with their Grammy. So Coach and I made it a date night. We went to Kohl's, Cheeburger Cheeburger, and Baskin Robbins before settling in to watch The Proposal. On Sunday, the girls and I went to visit my parents while Coach went to work (ugh, football season). Then we spent the evening at the county fair. The girls had tons of fun: Jocie said " I want to live here" and Mallie said the fair was 'so much cool". I wish I had pictures to post of this eventful weekend but my camera battery isn't working. Must get a new one before Halloween!!!!

Last night I made this recipe which I found on Rachael Ray's site. It was easy peasy and delish!
I only wish I would have taken a picture. Coach loved it, saying it tasted like homemade chicken pot pie.

Jessica Simpson’s Chicken and Dumplings
3 rolls of reduced-fat croissant rolls, divided
1 small rotisserie chicken, skin discarded and meat removed from bones
1 can of low-sodium, reduced-fat cream of chicken soup
1 can of low-sodium, reduced-fat cream of mushroom soup
1 cup low-sodium chicken broth
Salt and ground black pepper
Preheat oven to 400ºF.

Roll out the cans of croissant sheets and separate into diamond shaped sections. Place a small handful of rotisserie chicken on each diamond, fold dough over and press ends together to create dumplings. Cut up any excess dough into strips.

Line a 9×13″ baking dish with one layer of dumplings. Pour the can of cream of chicken soup over the layer of dumplings, followed by the can of cream of mushroom soup, and chicken broth.

Place strips in a crisscross pattern on the top of the dumplings and soup mixture, season dish with salt and ground black pepper and bake until the dumplings are tender and cooked through and the top is bubbly and brown, about 30 minutes.
Note: The only thing I would change is adding the salt & pepper before placing the strips across the top. I also would mix the cream of chicken & the cream of mushroom together in a bowl, then pour over the dumplings.

1. Your favorite beverage:

Being a Southern Belle, I was raised on Sweet Tea! And I must say I am addicted. I especially love the strawberry sweet tea at a local restaurant. Ahhhh....refreshing!

2. Your hometown:

Born and raised in Mobile, AL on the beautiful Gulf Coast! This particular beach is only 15 minutes away from my childhood home.

3. Your favorite television show:

I adore Heidi Klum, Tim Gunn, Michael Kors, and yes even Nina Garcia. I never get enough of hearing Tim's catch phrase "Make It Work!" or of Heidi saying "Byeee" after she tells the designers their challenge for the week. I love to listen to the designers cat fight and boast about their frocks, even when they are obvious train wrecks. I love it when Heidi doesn't like a design, she cracks me up.

4. Your occupation:

My current occupation: Office work.......boring!

Dream job # 1: Stay at Home Mom (busy busy busy but more time with the little ones)

Dream Job# 2 Boutique Owner....SIGH!

5. Your first car:

White Nissan Stanza 90s model, not sure of the year!

6. Your favorite dish:

Chicken and dumplings! Southern comfort food at it's finest! One of my Grand's specialties!

7. Celebrity you've been told you resemble:

When I was in my early twenties I was told I resemble

Eliza Dushku from Bring it On. WOW, now that is a compliment!!!!

But my husband thinks I resemble

Talia Shire of Rocky fame. Not too shabby and at least my hubby resists the urge to shout " Yo Adrian" at me.

8. Celebrity on your "to do" list:
Alexander Skarsgard (Vampire Eric on True Blood)

And Bradley Cooper!!!!

My husband would like me to mention he is okay with this as along as he can have

9. Your favorite childhood toy:

Barbie! I had ALL kinds of Barbies but my favorite was Barbie and the Rockers!

This photo makes me think of the innocence of childhood, my sister, my childhood best friend Tessa (who is still closest friend) and of course my funny little girls!

This would be the perfect snack for a fall or halloween themed party. Or just for a sweet treat for your funny little ones.

Mini Caramel Apples (Family Fun Magazine)

4-inch lollipop sticks
Melon baller
Granny Smith apples (one apple makes about 8 mini apples)
Butterscotch or peanut butter chips
Chopped nuts, nonpareils, sprinkles, shredded coconut (optional)
Small paper candy cups

1. First, cut the lollipop sticks in half at an angle (the pointy end will go into the apple pieces easier). With the melon baller, scoop little balls out of the apple. Each ball should have a section of apple peel. Push half of a lollipop stick into the peel of each ball. Pat the apple pieces dry.

2. Melt the chips according to the package directions. Dip and swirl the mini apples in the melted chips, then roll the apples in nuts, sprinkles, nonpareils, or coconut, if desired. Place the mini apples in paper candy cups to set.
